Armed Forces Day for Children 2017 was a fabulous success!  815 children from 125 schools across North Yorkshire traveled to Catterick Garrison for a day of entertainment and experiences provided by the Armed Forces based in North Yorkshire.  We even made it on to the local BBC News!  You don't have to take our word for it though - have a look at our photos of the day or read the gorgeous Thank You letters we received from some of the school children!

Armed Forces Day Pin Badge Competition 2017

MKC Heroes are holding an Armed Forces Day Pin Badge Competition again.  Children are asked to design the North Yorkshire Armed Forces Day Pin Badge for 2017, the winning design will be made into badges which will then be sold across North Yorkshire to raise funds for The Royal British Legion (the winning artist will get a prize too!) The competition is open to all school children in North Yorkshire and closing date for entries is 5th April 2017.  You can get an entry form here and return it to either Annabel Hall (c/o Holy Trinity Junior School, Church Lane, Ripon, HG4 2ES) or Nickie Young (c/o Hipswell Primary School, Hipswell Village, Catterick Garrison, DL9 4BB).  We're looking forward to seeing this years designs - Good Luck!

Armed Forces Day for Children, Friday 17th June 2016

Our unique Armed Forces Day for Children event was a fabulous success - as the photos in our gallery show!  Here are two accounts of the day from different perspectives, one written by the Service Pupils' Champions for the Catterick Garrison Gazette and other publications and one a compilation of comments from the 'Thank You' letters sent by children after the event.  Both are interesting to read but one is a lot more fun than the other! Armed Forces Day Badge Design Competition Winners

We had a wonderful response to our Armed Forces Day Badge Design Competition, last week Annabel and I met with Lt Col Mark Steed, Commander Catterick Garrison.  Together we went through the hundreds of entries and slowly whittled them down to a top four.  Which is where we got stuck!  After much deliberation we had to 'agree to disagree' and change the rules slightly - this year there are tow designs in third place!  The winner was Kieran from Kirby Hill Primary School, his wonderful design is with the badge makers right now and we will have the badges in time for our very special Armed Forces Day Children event in June.  Badges will cost £2.00 each and all proceeds will go to charity.  The runners up were Hannah from Holy Trinity Jnr School, Kyla from Colburn Community Primary School and Charlie from Hipswell CofE Primary School.  Photos are in our gallery now!

Get Muddy for Sport Relief

We've had a fantastic afternoon in Catterick Garrison today, more than 100 children came to 'Get Muddy for Sport Relief'!  Ably assisted by the PT Team from 1CS Bn REME, led by SSgt Mark Radcliffe, the children ran, climbed jumped and then rolled through mud - and raised £339.85 for Sport Relief!  Amazing effort from everyone and there are some fantastic photos in the gallery to prove it!

HMS Heroes AGM

The first ever North Yorkshire HMS Heroes AGM took place on 11th February 2016.  The afternoon was a chance for young people from a variety of schools across North Yorkshire to get together and discuss how HMS Heroes has worked this year and plan for next.  An important decision about the identity of HMS Heroes in North Yorkshire was made at the meeting, full details are in the minutes which are available on the HMS Heroes page.

Grand Unveiling of the Monty Tapestry

On Tuesday 9th February 2016 the Monty Tapestry was officially unveiled at Catterick Garrison Library.  The tapestry was one of four created by children in the Hohne Garrison, Germany as a way of remembering their time there before the Garrison closed and they all moved on to new schools, homes and countries.  The four tapestries were gifted to communities where the children who had made them were being posted to.  One went to Peterborough and one to Newcastle, one of the tapestries hangs in the Rathaus in Bergen as a memorial of the families who had lived there and the last tapestry was gifted to Catterick Garrison.  The unveiling event was attended by children who had moved to Catterick Garrison from the Hohne Garrison in 2015 and was a great chance for them to get together and talk about life in Germany and how they are settling in Catterick.  The whole event was organised by Mrs Lynn Eckersley, Headteacher of Montgomery School who told us she dearly misses speaking to the children every day.  Photos of the event are available in our gallery.

Material Wanted!
We have been asked to contribute to an exhibition at Bradford's Peace Museum called 'Choices Then and Now':
Featuring exhibits from the Peace Museum's unique collection, alongside a growing body of work created by visitors and participants, this dynamic exhibition aims to explore diversity, equality, peace, conflict, extremism, resilience, choices and consequences, during WWI and here and now in the 21st century.
The organiser of the exhibition is keen to capture the voices of today's children of military families and use this to compare with those of children and young people in World War 1. Material gathered could be in the form of letters, photos, articles, pictures, paintings  of children and young people today which portray a glimpse of life for the 21st century child's life.  This might be examples of eblueys, faxes, audio and visual clips, that they have sent their mum or dad away on operations, poems they have written, pictures, newsletters, reflections on what it's like being in a military family.
Please can you let us know if you have any material for this interesting exhibition?
Many thanks for your help.

Highly Commended at the Children & Young People Now Awards! North Yorkshire County Council received a Highly Commended Award at the C&YPNow Awards Ceremony last week.  Annabel Hall and Matt Blyton represented NYCC at the award ceremony and were delighted to receive the Highly Commended Award in the Family Support Category which recognises the work NYCC does with Service Families specifically through the Drawdown and at times of transition.  The C&YPNow Awards recognise initiatives from across the country so to be finalists was wonderful, to receive a 'Highly Commended' award is amazing!

Art Exhibition at The Station Gallery, Richmond - an exhibition of Service Pupils' artwork has gone on display in Richmond, North Yorkshire.  The artwork was created by children in schools across North Yorkshire and was originally exhibited at Ripon Cathedral having been put up to coincide with the Annual Service Pupils' Service on 6th November.  The wonderful artwork has the theme of 'New Beginnings' to recognise the arrivals to North Yorkshire this year and the many 'New Beginnings' our Service Pupils', their friends and families go through in their everyday life.  The artwork will be on display until the end of December - go and have a look!

HMS Heroes Day at Hipswell Primary School on Friday 18th September was an amazing day which the photos in our gallery show!  Everyone at Hipswell Primary School - from Mr Sykes, the Headteacher, to the youngest child at the school - came to school dressed as a hero.  We had a wide range of Heroes including a lot of Ironmen, some Super Girls, a couple of soldier Daddies and a Sodexo Mummy!  During the day I visited each class and played some of my favourite HMS Hero games with them which was brilliant fun!  In the afternoon the PTI's from 1CS Bn REME provided an assault course and timed each class round it.  Classes were given extra recognition for their team work and encouraging each other round the course.  Each Hero made a  £1 donation and HMS Heroes at Hipswell also held a Bake Sale and these things together raised £180 which is AMAZING!  HMS Heroes at Hipswell will use the money to set up their new HMS Heroes Club buying some games, a mascot and other club supplies.  Look out for HMS Hero Days at other schools with Service Pupils!

Children & Young People Now Awards Finalists!  We are very excited that North Yorkshire County Council are Finalists in the Children & Young People Now Awards 2015 in two categories - Family Support and Partnership.  NYCC have been shortlisted for their work with Service families relating to the drawdown from Germany, the 'Wherever Home Is' drama project, the support offered to schools with Service Pupils and the work of the Service Pupils' Champions.  The Awards Ceremony will be held in London in November, Annabel Hall will be accompanying Matt Blyton, Lead Adviser 0-11 (West) for NYCC on the evening, winning an award would be lovely but being finalists is a huge honour and we are delighted to be a small part of it!  CYNP Awards

Ambassadors @ the Climbing Wall! - Fantastic second meeting of our Ambassadors last night at the Climbing Wall, ITC, Catterick Garrison.  Ably instructed by Neil and Kirk, our fantastic Ambassadors - including two 'newbies' - scaled the walls right to the top.  Even Annabel and I had a go!  Climbing is all about teamwork, trust and communication and our Ambassadors showed they had those qualities in bucketloads!  Photos in the gallery.  Next Ambassadors meeting is in September, we're going to plan our course for World Domination and play some games - I'm a whizz at Rapidough so they better watch out!  Nickie
